Some evenings begin like any other and, without warning, become part of your life forever. That was the case for my wife and me this week while we were visiting our daughter. On Monday evening, we had just settled in with our granddaughter to watch Disney’s Beauty and the Beast when we learned that Peabo Bryson had suffered a stroke and had been taken to the hospital. Because the hour was growing late and little eyes were growing heavy, we promised her we would finish the story the next day. Then, on Tuesday evening, not long after Nana had put her to bed, we received the news no fan wanted to hear: Peabo Bryson had passed away. In an instant, an ordinary family visit became forever tied to the loss of one of the great voices of soul and R&B.

For listeners who came of age in the golden glow of the 1970s and 1980s, Bryson was never merely a voice on the radio. He was moonlight on a slow dance floor, velvet drifting from a car speaker on a summer night, the quiet companion of first love and lasting love alike. What made him special was not only the beauty of his voice, but the way he delivered a song—with tenderness, poise, and emotional intelligence. He did not simply perform love songs; he inhabited them. That is why his music has lasted. It became woven into the personal histories of the people who loved it, stitched into courtships, weddings, long drives, quiet evenings, and memories that still glow decades later.

That enduring quality can be heard in songs such as “Feel the Fire,” “I’m So Into You,” “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again,” “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “A Whole New World.” These are not just recordings; they are heirlooms—songs that have carried whole chapters of life inside them.

Perhaps that is why this loss settles so deeply. When our family sits down again to finish that beloved film, Bryson’s voice will still be there, warm and unmistakable, carrying wonder from one generation to the next. That is the gift of an artist like Peabo Bryson: even after the singer is gone, the song remains, and through it, so does a piece of his spirit.
