The strongest thread today is who gets to shape the future: voters defending political voice, Black communities preserving cultural landmarks, Akron neighborhoods rebuilding housing, climate-vulnerable communities confronting catastrophe, and musicians demanding rules for the AI era.

On August 28, 1963, a quarter of a million people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial to insist that America honor promises it had written into its founding documents but repeatedly denied to Black citizens. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave that demand its most enduring language. But the day was never only about a dream.

On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment, providing the final approval needed to add it to the United States Constitution.

The Fifteenth Amendment, ratified in 1870, had already declared that the right of citizens to vote could not be denied because of race, color or previous condition of servitude. But between a constitutional promise and the lived reality of Black Americans stood nearly a century of organized resistance.

As America recognizes its 250th birthday, there will be no shortage of opportunities to celebrate our nation's history. There will be fireworks, concerts, patriotic speeches, and parades honoring the ideals that gave birth to the United States two and a half centuries ago.
